Back To School Shopping For College Students

Well the time has finally come. It’s the middle of January, which means that college kids are already back or are quickly heading back to campus. This means kids will have to once again get back into the groove of studying, writing papers, and waking up for that 8AM class. Is there anything good about this time of the year? Well thank god for back to school shopping, which makes everyone at least a little excited about going back.

There are a few essential items that any college student needs (0r maybe just wants). One of the biggest gifts this holiday season was the Iphone 4s. All kids are going to be showing off their phone, and they are all going to look the same. Why not stand out and impress them by getting a fun cover. This is going to appeal especially to girls, who can get something as pretty as the marc by marc jacobs ‘dreamy logo’ iphone 4 cover strawberry. Your roomates will look at their boring white phone, and be jealous of your stunning cover which is sure to catch people’s eyes.

While guys may not exactly be into that type of “cute” cover, there are still new school supplies that they can look forward to. A new backpack to hold all of those new ridiculously heavy books can even be attractive for guys. Guys don’t want to look girly by having a big bag which may look like a purse. Medium sized backpacks in a manly color can do the trick to fix this problem. Maybe if you have a new backpack that you actually like, you will even want to use it more by going to use it and actually use the books in it.

For the guys who are starting an internship , that means that you actually have to take off that college sweatshirt and trade it for business clothes. Have no idea what shoes to pair a nice suit with? Luckily ll bean dusty bucks will not not only impress your boss but they will make you look nice and professional. What college girl doesn’t find a guy in dressy clothes attractive?

As a college student, I know it can be difficult to go shopping while on a college student budget. Luckily websites such as become.com are there for people like us, who sell the products that I talked about, as well as other products you’ve had your eye on. We can now have a fashion sense, and not break the bank.

The Parents Role In Drug Prevention

It’s not easy being a teen in today’s society. There are so expectations from parents that may not be tangible for the teen. Maybe the parent wants their teen to get straight A’s, be involved in school clubs, and play an instrument. Add those pressures to the expectations from the teens peers, and life can truly be chaotic. Teens also put pressure on themselves, as they see so many commercials showing what they really “should look like”. With all of these pressures, it’s not so out of the question to think that drugs may seem like a good idea for them.

I think that one of the ways that parents can reduce the chance of their teen trying drugs, is to simply talk to them about what’s going on in their life. Maybe something’s going wrong in school or with a peer. If the parent can get to the core of the problem, maybe they can prevent their teen from becoming so overwhelmed. I also think that parents should talk to their kids about drugs, and tell them about personal stories that they might have had with themselves or friends. If their teen hears a story about someone making poor choices when they are on drugs, maybe they won’t be tempted to do it.

Communication is key when it comes to teens and their parents. If no one talks about their problems, teens are more likely to reach their turning point and reach out for relief from the stress. Drugs may be one of these reliefs, which is why it’s so important to parents and teens to communicate about anything going on in their lives.

Growing up in NY

Thanks for the post from Sylvester Campbell

Growing up in Manhattan absolutely molded me in to the person I am today. My family was not made of money, and we did not live on the Upper East Side, but my parents firmly believed that living in such a culturally diverse city, with access to plays, museums, and the orchestra was worth a little bit of financial hardship. I wholeheartedly agree. I can’t imagine growing up anywhere else, and I knew after graduation that there was no way I was leaving New York for a more affordable city. That said, I knew I’d have to be wise about where I lived and how I spent my money. I moved in with three friends from school into a ridiculously tiny apartment in Brooklyn, and we don’t have a ton of expendable income. We are very conscious of where every penny goes, and we cut costs wherever we can. Fortunately, being a native New Yorker, I knew that our state is deregulated. That means we have the opportunity to select energy providers based on who offers the cheapest rate. You can check out New York Energy Rates and choose whichever provider offers the most affordable option. It’s a great way to save a little money so you can still afford to take advantage of everything New York has to offer.

Teen smoking is lower today than it has been in quite some time. Read the full article here.

How I Met Your Mother

Written by my friend Lino Brown

All my friends kept talking about How I Met Your Mother but I didn’t even have a TV so finally I broke down and bought one and went to cannonsatellite.com to get all the channels I needed. I have to admit, it is a pretty funny show. It’s really hilarious the way all the characters interact and I think it’s cool that you still don’t know who the mother of the guy’s kid is goin to be. You’d think after all this time you’d be able to figure it out but you know, there’s something to be said for a show that leaves you hanging like that. Remember back when on The Office everyone watched because of the Will They Won’t They tension between Jim and Pam and how much of a let down it was once they finally got together. I think it would have been a lot better if they’d let the suspense keep going so everyone would wonder what was going to happen from episode to episode. That’s good TV!

Craig Effron is Awesome

I have seen many men in my time who have seemed to be larger than life. Today, I can say that  Craig Effron is a permanent addition to this august and exclusive group.

He has earned his membership because of the strength of his character, the morals by which he lives his life, and by the seriousness with which he takes his friendships. Yet, I know that many who read this announcement will be unable to understand what it means to have these characteristics. So, I shall try to explain them, in the hopes that the clarification will allow you to one day join Mr. Effron and his peers.

Strength of character requires an inner confidence, a pleasant disposition, and a clear sense of right and wrong.  It is not enough to simply have morals, you must follow them at all times. Whether everyone will know of your actions or none will know, and whether your morals place you into conflict with others or not you must follow them. Otherwise they are simply an empty belief system you pay lip service to. Lastly, always remember that to be a good friend means to care for others as much as they care for you.

Craig Effron understands these principles, and that is how he has earned the praise that I bestow upon him. I urge you to follow his example, so that one day I can also count you among those men who have exceeded the expectations that the world has placed upon them.

How Parents Should React To Their Teens Fashion Sense

One of the things that parents of teenagers must observe is the clothes that their children where. In this case most parents tend to either go to one of two extremes. Either they allow their teenager to worry whatever he or she wishes, perhaps thinking that it doesn’t matter, or that they should allow their teen to express his or her individuality. The other extreme is that they become draconian in regulating what their kids where. Both approaches can be harmful.

The problems with the draconian method are obvious. The teens chafe under what they consider to be their parents’ unfair rules. It is true that there is some value in the idea that teenagers need to be able to express themselves, and one way that they do that is through the clothing that they wear.  If parents try to take away their children’s ability to decide on their own fashion than they essentially invite rebellion and risky behavior as a form of protest.

However, parents should not be completely unaware of their teen’s clothing choices either. What they choose to wear can be an indicator of what activities they are pursuing and the type of friends that they are choosing to spend their time with. Thus if they are starting to dress in a way that emphasizes negative characteristics you should make an attempt to steer them away from that direction. Instead of being confrontational, you may try to present them with a gift of women’s or mens clothes that they is close to their fashion style but with slight differences that move further towards your vision. This is a non confrontational way to positively influence your teen.

Maintaining a Good Credit Score

credit scoreThe easiest way of determining how good your credit history has been, is for lenders to check your credit score.  This score, computed based on factors like amounts of money you owe, types of credit you have used, delinquent and missed payments, is a three-digit number that accurately shows how responsible you have been with payments on credit cards, mortgages and the like.

The score is computed independently by 3 major credit bureaus – TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian.  Each of these uses the Fair Isaac Credit Organization (FICO) standard to compute credit scores.  A score of 700 or higher is considered good.

Monitoring Credit Scores

A credit score can be purchased individually from all 3 credit bureaus. Alternatively a free credit score is available at services like Freescore.com.  There is a charge for membership, but this is outweighed by the unlimited access consumers get to their credit scores all year long.  Consumers can then begin to actively manage their scores and protect themselves from identity theft as Freescore offers 24/7 credit monitoring at all 3 bureaus, plus email alerts on any activity.

Make use of the free credit score offers and take charge of your score!

Identity Theft and Identity Fraud

Identity Hawk

Identity Hawk

Identity theft or fraud has fast become one of the most dangerous crimes in the world today, with fraudsters using another’s identity to apply for credit, access bank accounts and get information on the victim’s personal details like medical records and credit history.  Often, identity theft goes undetected until the victim is presented with a bill for an item he/she never purchased, or is turned down for a line of credit.  Hence, identity theft protection has become very important.

A person’s Social Security Number is primary to his or her identity.  With a 1 in 7 chance of a fraudster using your SSN, you need to protect yourself against your identity being stolen.  IdentityHawk offers identity theft protection, a service that IdentityHawk has been providing for years, with a good track record.  This service is like an Internet-wide security system that alerts you to any identity threats by scanning the internet for signs of fraud.

How it works

After signing up for identity theft protection, you are provided with an Identity Health Score which measures your risk for fraud.  The service then helps you monitor and improve upon your Identity Health Score and thus stop fraud from occurring altogether.

New Job Requirements

Thanks for the guest post by Esteban Vinson

When I first started my new job I was a bit worried about the technological requirements. I mean, I know how to use the internet and everything but when it came to SEO, I had no idea. Do you even know what SEO is? I sure didn’t! I had to spend a lot of time when I first started learning Google Analytics and all the SEO software I needed to really be good at my job. It took a while but now I feel like I’m finally getting the hang of it and I’m a better employee for it! Do any of you out there have any horror stories about learning new technology and not being very good at it? I remember when my husband first started his new job and he had a Bloomberg terminal – have you ever seen one of those things? They’re huge and there are so many crazy buttons I don’t know how he ever figured it out! I love him to death but I would have quit right then…
