Use-This is experimental use of drugs. Maybe they have been tried one or two times out of curiosity or pressure from peers. There are usually no problems that have materialized out of the use of drugs at this level.
Misuse-Shows that the person is using drugs on a somewhat regular basis. Some minor problems may be felt as a result of drug use.
Abuse-Preoccupation has set in. This person thinks and plans for their next drug use on an almost daily basis. Hiding and sneaking drugs and the use of them is common. The person begins to rebel against school and family rules. Personal values and goals begin to diminish. A change in attitude and behavior is noticeable. Legal problems can set in at this level.
Addiction-This shows compulsive use of drugs. The person at this point has lost control over the drug use. It becomes an obsession and develops a priority over other needs. It becomes difficult to quit. Health problems may become noticeable. Mental confusion can set in. A drastic change in behavior and attitude is seen. Legal problems can become more prevalent.
